Analytical Writing
This course aims to help students think about analysis in more than just literary terms. We will look at different ways to analyze evidence across multiple disciplines in the humanities, with special emphasis on making and supporting persuasive arguments. Students will engage with salient real-world topics and learn to organize and present their thoughts through academic essays, policy proposals, and open letters.
We will also touch on more advanced techniques in academic writing that will prove essential in college, such as “scoping” and “addressing gaps in knowledge.” By the end of this course, students will have developed the necessary skills to write with clear reasoning and independent thought.
After Lesson 3 students will submit a short five-paragraph essay on a predetermined topic. For the final assignment, they will be given the option of writing a policy proposal or an open letter.
